Alright, for May we reach out to a Brisbanian artist named Jordan, or maybe better of known as Zapéd. He’s most recognisable tracks have got to be Paradise feat. Georgia Potter OR Prague ft. Groszek, which definitely caught the attention of Triple J and Unearthed. Grabbing praise from what seemed to be the whole team; Dave Ruby Howe, Dom Alessio and Zan Rowe all showing their support.
His track ‘Eyes Collide‘ was also included on German label Traum Schallplatten‘s Tour De Traum compilation alongside artists like Parra for Cuva and Dominik Eulberg. The same track also found it’s self released in Australia via Sydney’s very reputable Stoney Roads Records.
For this month Jordan put together a special live mix for us, he was also kind enough to drop some new unreleased material in there. We, of course, wanted to ask a few generic, yet essential questions to get to know Zapéd a little better. You can find Q’s & TRACK-LISTING placed below mix:
What have you went for & how have you chosen to use your 30 mins in this mix: I chose to record a live DJ set incorporating some of my favourite tracks and my own from the past 6 months. A large portion of the tracks are from international artists as I spent some time living in Berlin a couple years ago and found some really inspirational producers. I also slipped in two unreleased Zapéd tracks as I thought it would be cool to give them a run.
How did it all start?
I’ve been properly producing for about five years now under Zapéd. I was initially into more guitar driven pop music but made the transition around 2012 as I found being able to produce really helped my overall sound and direction. I only started djing while I was living overseas as it was the norm in Germany. I wanted to do an ode to some friends in Berlin so I incorporated one of their tracks into this mix. Guess which one?
What swung you towards electronic music?
Acts like Cut Copy & Booka Shade definitely got the wheels turning for me back in the late 2000’s. I studied sound engineering at high school and was always pretty interested in sound so electronic music was a natural progression for me. I fell in love with the idea of only needing a laptop to create music as it allowed me to have total control over my sound. I’m still learning new techniques every day which is so awesome considering I’ve been doing this for a while now.
How do you best describe your sound?
Ambient Dance Music that embodies emotion.
What’s the game plan for the new 2017?
I’ve already released one single this year entitled ‘Spatial Impression‘ but plan on releasing another single in the upcoming months followed by an E.P at the end of year.
I also keeping myself very busy running my own electronic music event called ‘Arcadia‘ which is returning for its second year in 2017. It’s based about 1.5 hrs west of Brisbane and will include a heap of local talent including Willaris. K, Austen & myself. I definitely recommend coming along if you live in QLD as it’s a great way to support our local electronic music scene.
The whole Aussie scene is growing by the min, so many gems out there now. So, if you could pick any other Aussie to collab with in 17, who would it be?
This is a tough one as there are so many good artists in Aus atm. If I had to choose my absolute dream collab it would be with Hayden James of course. Also, Anatole is someone I’ve been keeping my eye on. He’s like Australia’s very own Olafur Arnalds!
& what about one hot tip, one act you think is about to pop & will be the next big thing?
Even though it’s well and truly underway I think Golden Vessel will be big time. I remember listening to his exclusive monthly mix for you guys and being wowed. Such a talent and I wish him all the best.
Lastly, hope this is not too personal, but if you had to pick one, avo’s or mangoes for rest of your life where would your allegiance lay?
Depends, are we talking about Milton Mangoes here? Either way, I’m gonna have to go with my millennial instinct and pick the Avo, smashed, not stirred.
